By the following week, Emily suspected that Sabrina was somehow off her meds, at least some of them. The capsule easily dissolved in Sabrina’s coffee, but Mrs. Roth’s behavior had changed. Her husband saw nothing of her agitation or that frightening glitter in her eyes because those “tells” only appeared after his car left the driveway. Sabrina was a very good actress.

The twitch was gone, though she’d seen Sabrina do a very good imitation for Henry’s benefit. Whatever her natural mental condition, it was emerging day by day. One thing was clear, even to a novice: Sabrina Roth was the opposite of depressed. Manic was more accurate.

After her golf league, Sabrina wanted to go for a drive. The destination was hazy, with Sabrina ordering her to stop at random locations and then finally directing Emily to bring her home. It seemed like a drive to nowhere. But Emily remembered some of these spots were the addresses programed into Sabrina’s favorites.

But why?

Back at the Roths’ home, she dropped Sabrina at the door. Some part of her noted the rush with which Mrs. Roth entered the house but she thought that just meant she needed a bathroom. Emily continued to the garage. Once inside the home, she searched for Sabrina, finding her in the poolside bathroom.

“You okay?”

“Fine.”

“Ready for lunch?”

“Yes.”

“What would you like?”

“Surprise me.”

Emily paused, blinking at that odd answer. Up until this minute, Sabrina Roth had dictated every detail of her meals. Sabrina didn’t like surprises. She liked getting exactly what she wanted.

This attitude of adventure or of caring very little suggested she had other, more important things on her mind.
